Beechgrove Garden - 2010 - Episode 21

We are thinking ahead to winter - winter veg, that is. Jim is sowing a range of winter lovelies with an oriental twist in our deep bed plot - winter greens for warming stir fries or chilly salads. In the meantime, Lesley sows in similar containers, some of which are small enough for the windowsill, to show how we can all continue to be productive all year round even in the smallest of spaces. Lesley also replaces the Equinox Garden fence that was lost last winter. She demonstrates the range of screening materials that are available, from reed to canes, heather to willow and even ferns. The 'Beechgrove Butcher' is at it again as George Anderson gets his pruning shears, secateurs and loppers out to tackle Sara and Michael Reid's garden in Edinburgh. The couple bought their house last year and inherited a large and overgrown garden. They struggled to keep on top of it and are in desperate need of tips on pruning and the best plants for ground cover. The Beechgrove Butcher makes a meal of it. Carole visits Mrs Greenall near Dunure, who has a national collection of hydrangeas. This collection showcases what outstanding garden plants they are for the west coast of Scotland. The garden is perched inland, above cliffs overlooking Arran, blasted by winds but protected by shelter belts of sorbus, escallonia and other shrubs.
