Presented by Martin Handley, from the Royal Albert Hall, London. Conductor Roger Norrington brings his German orchestra, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, to the Proms for a programme that includes key works by three much-loved composers. The concert begins with Rossini's overture to his opera William Tell, with its brooding prelude for cellos and famous galloping ending, and is followed by Haydn's early C major Cello Concerto, long-thought lost until it turned up in the 1960s. The soloist is young French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, here making his BBC Proms debut.
