From the Royal Albert Hall, London, Suzy Klein presents the first act of Monteverdi's opera The Coronation of Poppaea. This tale of love, betrayal and murderous ambition is presented in a semi-staged version of the new production from Glyndebourne Festival Opera, with soprano Danielle de Niese and mezzo Alice Coote as the treacherous lovers Poppea and Nero. Though based on historical characters, the battle of emotional wills at the centre of this drama has as many resonances today as it would have had for Monteverdi's 17th-century audience.
