The UK's maternal mortality rate is one of the worst in the developed world. Most births occur in hospital, and around a quarter of them are by Caesarean section. Many women want a perfect birth and some are disappointed by the experience. In some parts of the country midwives and doctors do not have a good relationship. Penny Marshall looks back at the key decisions that have been made over the last century that have produced the maternity services in the NHS today.
