The Ulster Ochestra performs music recorded in the Ulster Hall, Belfast, as part of the 2009 BBC Summer Concert series. The year's themes include French connections, Irish pianists and Northern Ireland's composers. The programme begins with a performance of Milhaud's Le boeuf sur le toit (The Cow on the Roof) - a fictional American nightspot and the stage setting of a 1920 scenario by Jean Cocteau. Straight to the Point by Elaine Agnew is the featured work by a Northern Ireland composer and was inspired by a scuba diving trip to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Dublin pianist Hugh Tinney performs Hamilton Harty's Piano Concerto, a work which shows the influence of Rachmaninov as well as Irish folk music. 2.10pm Milhaud: Le boeuf sur le toit Pierre Andre Valade (conductor) Elaine Agnew: Straight to the Point Jane Glover (conductor) 2.35pm Hamilton Harty: Piano Concerto Hugh Tinney (piano) Jane Glover (conductor) 3.30pm Massenet: Scenes Alsaciennes Suite No 7 Jane Glover (conductor).
