Presented by Ian Skelly. BBC Proms 2009 A Prom featuring the BBC Symphony Orchestra performing a new piece by Detlev Glanert, which offers a foretaste of his opera The Wooden Ship. Denis Matsuev, winner of the 1998 Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition makes his Proms debut in Rachmaninov's variations of Paganini's famous Caprice. The programme concludes with celebrated Shostakovich interpreter Semyon Bychkov conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Shostakovich's Symphony No 11. Written in 1957, the work ostensibly commemorates the failed anti-Tsarist uprising of 1905, but under the surface it rages at the Soviet authorities.
