Scotsman Rab Wilson presents this week’s Kist from the 7th Annual Symposium on languages at Queen’s University, Belfast, and finds out what’s being done to preserve the Scots and Ulster-Scots languages. The organiser of this symposium, Dr John Kirk, gives an overview of the content of the symposium; and John Law, Editor of Lallans magazine gives us a synopsis of the paper he delivered during the morning session. Well known author and broadcaster, Billy Kay, discusses his talk on the state of the Scots language in 2007; and we hear from Professor Ian Brown who was the Professor of Drama at Queen Margaret College for many years and is a well known playwright in Scots drama. He tells Rab about the importance of drama for sustaining language. Back in the Great Hall, Rab meets up with local teacher, Nicola Lennon and asks her about the relevance of Scots and Ulster-Scots in the classroom. The programme ends with Professor John Corbett and Dr Wendy Anderson of Glasgow University sharing their thoughts on the Scottish Corpus of Text & Speech which they have designed.
