Dr Alex Paterson from ambient pioneers The Orb takes the 6 Mix, playing tunes which have influenced his music and talking about his new album 'Metallic Spheres'; a collaboration with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. Founded by Paterson and Jimmy Cauty in 1988, the Orb became pioneers of ambient techno, forging their distinctive sound after Cauty left to concentrate on his other band, the KLF. Best known for their massive hits 'Little Fluffy Clouds' and 'Perpetual Dawn', the band have continued to push the boundaries of electronic music over the last twenty years. In this programme, Alex plays selection of music which has been inspiring his recent work including tunes by Public Image Limited and HFB. He also talks about his new album 'Metallic Spheres' - a collaboration with producer Youth and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour - sharing the unusual story of how it came into being. Alex discusses how it felt working with the Pink Floyd frontman after the NME had told him to 'hate Pink Floyd' as a young punk, and the sonic influences which appear on the record. There's also a chance to hear the 'Metallic' movement of the album in its full glory as well as a brand new sixty minute Orb mix.
