1989: Simpson Returns - Episode 3

The BBC's World Affairs Editor John Simpson tells the story of 20 years of post-communist life. Through personal stories, he traces the different roads that East Germany, the Czech Republic and Romania have taken since 1989. John witnessed at first hand the bloody overthrow of the Ceausescu regime. The brutal dictator and his wife were executed on Christmas Day 1989, with the dramatic scenes played out on TV. John returns to Bucharest 20 years later to assess what has happened since.
