Pride and Privilege - Far From the Madding Crowd

Documentary series filmed over one academic year following the pupils and teachers of Glenalmond College, one of Scotland's oldest and most prestigious public schools. Nestled in the middle of the rolling hills in Perthshire, it costs nearly 24,000 pounds a year to send a child there. It is a world where ancient Greek and lacrosse go hand in hand, where chapel is mandatory six days a week, and where class sizes range from two to 20 pupils. But beneath the sandstone it is also a place where pupils have their own bar, a sauna and find a way to sneak cigarettes and alcohol in. During the year, we meet a Cambridge University hopeful, a slacker with dreams of the big stage, a hormonal and rugby-mad 16-year-old, and Glenalmond's biggest eccentric. For the first time in over 160 years, the school has granted one state educated child a full scholarship, but how will he fare? Another new face is Head of Chemistry, whose wife has given up her high-powered job in the City to become a full time mother. In September, pupils from all over the UK arrive and for some it is the first time they have lived away from their homes. For others, it is business as usual as Antz tries for the top rugby squad and some of the girls plan their great escape.
