Presented by Louise Fryer Live from the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, the BBC Philharmonic is joined by conductor Gunther Herbig, who has a long standing relationship with the orchestra, and has worked with many of the major international ensembles. As a previous Principal Guest conductor of the orchestra, he introduces an artist making his debut with the BBC Philharmonic, the American pianist Shai Wosner. Wosner, a former Radio 3 New Generation Artist, performs one of Mozart's most popular piano concertos. Gunther Herbig then explores Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony. Written in 1936 but withdrawn by the composer before performance after difficulties with the Soviet regime, it was finally performed after the death of Stalin in 1961. In this massive work Shostakovich uses his huge orchestra to unforgettable effect.
