Jamie Cullum - Dave Brubeck Part One

Logo for Jamie Cullum - Dave Brubeck Part One

Jamie Cullum showcases his love for all types of jazz, and music rooted in jazz, from its heritage to the future. This week sees the first of a two-part special, in which Jamie interviews the American jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, who turns 90 in December. Dave's career has spanned over six decades, during which he has innovated with time signatures, counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality. His list of international honours has included a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award from the London Symphony Orchestra, and he was designated a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress. In a unique interview recorded at the 2010 Newport Jazz Festival, Jamie asks his hero all the questions he has always wanted answered, such as how he first became a musician, and what was the first piece of music he ever wrote. Brubeck speaks openly and reflectively on how music saved his life during the war. He also talks about how his wife of 67 years has played an active role getting his music out there and inspired some of his favourite tunes. From one legendary musician to one greatly influenced by him, this is a chance for both to share their experiences, tell their anecdotes and swap musical advice.
