Petroc Trelawny presents a selection of music and guests from the arts world. Award-winning composer Tan Dun talks to Petroc about the latest performance of his ten-movement, 55-minute concerto for cello, video and orchestra. The Map was first performed in 2002 and connects Chinese singing and dance with the rituals of a more traditional solo concerto. And conductor Stéphane Denève talks to Petroc from Glasgow ahead of his 'Springtime in Paris' concerts with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. 17:05 OFFENBACH Gaîté parisienne (opening Allegro) Boston Pops Orchestra Arthur Fiedler (conductor) RCA VD87734 TR 1 2.03 17:08 RAVEL Jeux d’Eau Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano) At Wigmore Hall 5.18 17:14 RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Allegro (Les Vendredis) Vertavo Quartet SIMAX PAX 1178 TR 7 7.42 17:23 TAN DUN Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (opening) Yo Yo Ma (cello solo) Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Shanghai National Orchestra Shanghai Percussion Ensemble Tan Dun (conductor) Sony Classical SK89347 TR 1 3.20 17:33 TAN DUN Herdboy’s Song (Eight Memories in Watercolour, Op 1) Lang Lang (piano) DG 474 820 2 CD 1 TR 12 1.40 17:41 TAN DUN Ghost Opera (Act II: Earth Dance) Kronos Quartet with Wu Man Nonesuch 7559794452 TR 2 6.45 17:48 BEETHOVEN 7 Variations on Die Zauberflote, WoO 46 (Bei Mannern welche Liebe fuhlen) Janos Starker (cello) Rudolf Buchbinder (piano) Apex 2564 69223-7 CD 2 TR 6 10’24 18:04 TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No 6 (2nd movement: Allegro con grazia) Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra Roger Norrington (conductor) Hannsler CD 93.232 CD 1 TR 9 7.04 18:12 CHOPIN Nocturne in E flat, Op 55 No 2 Vladimir Ashkenazy (piano) Decca 475 859 2 CD 3 TR 9 5.14 18:18 OFFENBACH Gaîté parisienne (Cancan; Vivo; Barcarolle) Boston Pops Orchestra Arthur Fiedler (conductor) DG 423 698 2 TR 15-16 6.17 18:29 SATIE 1ere Gymnopédie Jean-Yves Thibaudet (piano) Decca 473 620 2 CD 1 TR 4 3.35 18:38 POULENC Concerto for Two Pianos (3rd movement: Finale) Frank Braley & Eric Le Sage (pianos) Liege Philharmonic Orchestra Stephane Deneve Conductor RCA 82876603082 TR 3 5.35 18:46 VIVALDI Concerto in F, RV569 La Serenissima Adrian Chandler (violin) Director Avie AV 2154 TR 1-3 12.21
