Greta Dudgeon directed by Mary Peate "But I know this city...Tony. This town. His town. Their town." Adaptation of B.S. Johnson's 1969 novel in which a sports journalist travels to a strange city to cover a football match, only to discover it was the city where he first met his friend Tony who has died young of cancer. We follow the journalist from his arrival at the train station, through lunch, to the match and on the journey home, as different memories of his friend are triggered. Listen as the author intended - in a random order The book was published in a box, in 27 sections, to be read in any order, except for the first and the last sections. Its structure is intended to mirror the arbitrary way that the author’s mind worked on this particular day – the random coming together of memories of Tony and the business of reporting a football match. Graham White’s adaptation follows the book’s logic and so we have provided separate sections which, following the broadcast on 17th October, can be randomised using the carousel below. Simply click on the illustrations to listen to each of the 18 sections in the order you want to hear them. As in the published text, the first and last sections are marked so that you can listen to them first and last. The adaptation was randomised before its original transmission on Sunday 17th October 2010, with the order of sections decided by a draw on Radio 3’s The Verb. As a bonus, our carousel features one additional section which was not part of that original broadcast. This carousel will stay live for 3 months after the original transmission.
