James Naughtie remembers English conductor Sir John Barbirolli, in his own words as well as in the recollections of colleagues and through archive recordings. Barbirolli had Italian and French blood in his veins but he was a proud cockney who became a champion of English music. When he died in 1970, Britain lost a figure who seemed part of our musical life. Barbirolli is remembered affectionately for his work with the Halle Orchestra in Manchester with whom he forged a unique bond from 1942 onwards and brought new vigour and worldwide renown to the oldest professional orchestra in Britain. James chairs a discussion between Sir Mark Elder, current music director of the Halle, David Lloyd-Jones, conductor and founder of Opera North, and writer Andrew Farach-Colton.
