Presented by Penny Gore. BBC Proms 2009 Another chance to hear a Prom tracing the musical cross-fertilisation between East and West, and France and Spain with a leading French orchestra conducted by Jun Markl. Takemitsu's Ceremonial showcases the Japanese sho, a bamboo-piped mouth organ, which also features in Hosokawa's recent Cloud and Light, inspired by an image of the Buddha. Bizet never visited Spain but even Spaniards, such as Sarasate, adored his Carmen. Ravel, by contrast, imbibed a love of Spain from his Basque mother, though the gypsy in his Tzigane is probably Hungarian.
